The first Ligurian keyboard prototype

After numerous preliminary experiments, members of the Council have produced the first physical prototype of a Ligurian keyboard.

It is the first keyboard designed to let people type the characters needed to write in all Ligurian varieties, including the vertical accents used in Monégasque. The layout takes account of how often the different characters are used, to make typing easier.

The testing phase will continue for a few more months, with the aim of producing further physical prototypes in 2027. Anyone interested in taking part in the testing can write to us at info@conseggio-ligure.org.

The Anthology now features over 150 authors

Our Anthology of Ligurian literature edited by Alessandro Guasoni keeps growing: it now features works by more than 150 authors, from the earliest days to the present.

From the verse of the Genoese Anonym and Paolo Foglietta to the poetry of Fiorenzo Toso and contemporary authors, the collection spans centuries of Ligurian literature. Introductions accompany the texts, helping readers get to know the authors and the context in which their works were written. Every excerpt is accompanied by its Italian translation. A growing number of texts are also available in audio format, with readings by the authors themselves where possible.

Artificial intelligence and Genoese: Seminar at the University of Genoa

On June 11, at 3:00 PM, our members Jean Maillard and Stefano Lusito will hold an invited seminar at the Department of Computer Science, Bioengineering, Robotics and Systems Engineering (DIBRIS) of the University of Genoa.

The meeting – entitled “Towards AI for all of the world’s languages: from massively multilingual models to a set of digital tools for Genoese” – will be dedicated to language technologies based on artificial intelligence and their applications to languages with few digital resources, with particular attention to Genoese.

The seminar will take place in room 710 of the Valletta Puggia campus, in via Dodecaneso 35, Genoa.

Translation of a Topolino Story into Genoese

On the occasion of the National Day of Dialects and Local Languages, held on 17 January, issue no. 3660 of Topolino features, in four different Italian regions, a translation into the respective local idiom of the story Paperino lucidatore a domicilio, written and scripted by Vito Stabile and illustrated by Francesco D’Ippolito. The initiative is part of a Panini Comics project aimed at promoting Italy’s linguistic diversity, launched last year and coordinated by Professor Riccardo Regis of the University of Turin.

Thanks to the work of our member Stefano Lusito, the story has also been rendered into Genoese and is accompanied by a short introductory essay outlining the position of Genoese within the Ligurian varieties, the criteria adopted for Genoese spelling and reading, and the main choices made in the translation.

This is the first “official” Genoese adaptation of a Disney comic (and, more broadly, of a mass-market comic), and it symbolically opens the door to new and more structured projects aimed at promoting the language through elements of popular culture.

13th National “Salva la tua lingua locale” Award

Two volumes from the Zimme de braxa series, published by Editrice Zona under the auspices of the Conseggio pe-o patrimònio linguistico ligure, were honored at the thirteenth edition of the National “Salva la tua lingua locale” (Save your local language) Award, organized by the Italian National Pro Loco Union and the Eugenio Montale International Center. Gh’é o vento ch’o mescia by Paolo Besagno won joint first place in the Published Poetry category, while Ei foe déi ferguò by Roberto Benso was a finalist in the same category.

The award ceremony will take place on December 5, 2025 in Rome, in the Protomoteca Hall on the Capitoline Hill.

With these recognitions, the series confirms its role as a key reference point for the promotion of the Ligurian language and literature.
